Laser Dentistry

Benefits of Lasers in Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry is age defined specialty based not on a particular skill, but encompassing all aspects of child development in health and disease. Working with children is different from working with adults, it is essential to familiar with age-appropriate skills and functioning, and development. This century has seen advent of advancements even pediatric dentistry also influenced by all such advancements. Such changing trends help us to raise the standards by incorporating child-friendly approaches into dental care.

The use of different types of new lasers enables pediatric dentist to provide minimally invasive dentistry for hard and soft tissue procedures with minimal discomfort, and no pain during and after treatment. It minimized the use of injections, eliminated the vibrations, smell of conventional dentistry and was appreciated by parents and children. This makes dental visit stress free and install positive dental attitude in a child

Laser dentistry is one of dentistry’s latest advances. The Laser delivers energy in the form of light. Depending on the intended result, this energy travels at different wavelengths and is absorbed by a “target.” In dentistry, these targets can be enamel, decay, gum tissue, or whitening enhancers. Each one absorbs a different wavelength of light while reflecting others.Laser dentistry can be used for both tooth and soft tissue related procedures. Often times no local anesthesia is required. Unlike the dental drill with laser dentistry there is no heat or vibration, making the procedure quite comfortable for most patients. For soft tissue (surgical) procedures it eliminates the need for suturing and healing is much faster.

Lasers can be used to diagnose cavities. They can find hidden decay in teeth in early stages, and in some cases the decay can be reversed through hygiene and fluoride treatment and may never need filling.

In our clinic, we are using latest laser technology with various types of laser such as; Diode, Er:Yag, Nd:Yag as well as Canary caries detecting system for early caries detection.

The Erbium Laser-No Shot, No Drill for many procedures

The Erbium laser offers an alternative to the high-speed drill, preserves tooth structure and is anti-microbial so reduces infection

Using lasers means we can provide our patients with a new method of dental care that can often be performed without the use of local anesthesia.

The sensation associated with the laser is reported as a slight feeling of warmth and so comfortable that in many cases no numbing is required and most children tolerate the ‘popping’ sound  of the ” light sabre” very well.

Without the need for local anaesthetic more teeth in different areas of the mouth can be treated in one visit often leading to fewer visits being required to complete the dental treatment.

The Diode laser is a soft tissue laser and is used for frenotomies, tongue tie revisions and bio-stimulation. It also kills bacteria and can encourage tissue regeneration. There is less bleeding with the laser than with the scalpel so less need for suturing.
